A monodrama based on a reportage book, EMT is considered one of the most outstanding examples of the genre in Poland in recent years. Its author, Jakub Sieczko, is a doctor, a specialist in anaesthesiology and intensive care who worked for six years as an EMT in an ambulance in Warsaw. The book’s protagonist does not beat about the bush: “I have a lie about Grochów. Sometimes, I think that only old women and drunken middle-aged men live here.” This is probably why the reviewer of Polityka wrote: “Sieczko goes to great lengths to strip the EMT profession of its heroism and bring the viewers of sensationalist hospital serials down to earth (...). With what effect? Paradoxically, the opposite.”

The production won the Grand Prix of the second edition of the TEATROPOLIS Festival of the Art of Acting and the award for the best role in the Open category for Marcin Hycnar. In its statement of reasons, the award jury pointed out that the prize is for the ambiguous and multicoloured acting, presenting a wide range of emotions, and for the portrait of the contemporary world.

“What kind of performance is it where half the audience bursts out laughing and then, a moment later, you are secretly wiping away tears and sniffling in a completely un-theatrical way? What kind of performance is this, where just one actor creates a constant wave of emotions? He is bored, impatient, irritated, touching, sensitive, insensitive, joyful and hopeful, sad and bitter, full of life and empty. This is a performance you have to see”.

The impression of constant tension, the relentless pursuit of the protagonist and his world, is enhanced by Radosław Luka’s music and flashing lights. EMT is a long monodrama by the standards of the genre, it is two hours of extremely intense, almost obsessive narration, which Marcin Hycnar controls at all times, never losing the interest of the audience, never abandoning the intense and strangely intimate relationship he has established with them from the very beginning”.
